The Darkest Eyes by Mick Brady is a meld of different genres, a psychological thriller slash fantasy, featuring a sophisticated protagonist. Will Roan has always wanted to escape any trouble. In fact she spends her entire life running from trouble. The only disturbing thing is that trouble seems to follow her wherever she goes. Now, the nasty creatures that have followed her through her entire life — aliens and monsters — seem to have stepped up their game. Is she losing her mind? A scientist who believes in logical reasoning, Will thinks she is on the edge of insanity. Her dying mother leaves her carved crystal skull, an intriguing object that she wants nothing to do with. It would have been easy to run away from it, but not when her beloved nine-year-old niece disappears. Dare she use the skull to open the portal to Atlantis? Her search for the missing niece sets her on a dizzying adventure, one that any reader will want to engage in.

Mick Brady has a captivating style of writing, drawing readers into the minds of the characters and taking them off to exciting places. The exotic character of the writing is augmented by the author’s ability to evoke powerful images; it is at times poetic, at times descriptive, but it creates an atmosphere that reflects the moods and the themes beautifully developed in the writing. The opening is powerful, lyrical in style and filled with symbolism. Listen to these lines: “Louis Armstrong’s trumpet painted the walls of the little craft with soaring blue notes. He climbed, she fell. The contrast pleased her. Will sat back, muscles relaxed, mind drifting in a pleasant state of meditation.” And that is how the entire novel reads; a work of pure imagination and excellent craft. The characters are phenomenal, ingeniously developed and relatable. The Darkest Eyes has an unusual plot, written to excite the reader’s imagination. There is balance, entertainment, and eerie music that readers hear in their minds as they read this engrossing narrative.”
